His sister Livoniia's husband, Mr. Hoag, reportedly got Andrus a job abou t 1872 as a "mule boy" on the Erie Canal. Andrus soon left the east and d rifted between farm and ranch jobs across the west. [S733]

Andrus (Andy), who always spelled his name "Hurlbert", was working in 188 6/7 on a wheat threshing crew in eastern Washington and Oregon when he me t Martha Crane Green. Abandoned by her first husband (Mr. Jenkins), Marth a (Mattie) Green was cooking for the crew. She was raising a daughter, Am y, from her first marriage. Andy and Mattie married and moved to Californ ia. They farmed and owned one of the first trucking companies in the stat e. [S733]

Notes

Amasa and his wife are buried in the Market Street Cemetary in Cape Vince nt, New York. Amasa provides a direct link to the Hurlbut family tree i n Connecticut U.S.A. In the 1810 census records for Jefferson County the re is no listing for Amasa but he does appear in the 1820 records for th e Town of Hounsfield in Jefferson County. He is listed as the Head of th e Family, as more than 45 years of age, with a female between 26 and 45 y ears of age and a male child between the ages of 10 and 16 years also liv ing at that residence. A record of Amasa and Rhoda is found in a lan d purchase in Sacketts Harbour, Jefferson County, New York in 1817. Thi s transaction was between Thomas Ogden and 'the children of Amasa Hurlbut , named as follows; Hannah, Harvey, David, Harriet and Gerardus Hurlbut' . In the 'History of Jefferson County' we find a notation that 'severa l English families settled at Sacketts Harbour in 1805 among whom was 'Am asa Hollibut', an interesting spelling of that much mis-spelled surname.
