Oregon Folks [from The Oregon Journal, 24 January, 1933, page 8] Dr. Jose ph M. Short of Portland was born at Elora, Canada, in 1871. Dr. Short i s one of a fa y at Detroit, Mich., in 1896. In 1900 he located at Gresha m, Or., where he moved to Mount Ta y Dorothea, a graduate of Mills colleg e, who is employed in the Portland public library; Kath According to hi s oldest child, Dorothea: ÒDuring the late 1890s, Short had been a Ôcomp any d d men. His wife, Sara, had spent too many nights seated, revolve r in hand, beside the dining Tired of that existence, the Shorts weighe d the pros and cons of the Ôcompany lifeÕ versus a hort soon discovered . His patients paid him in produce. Potatoes came in a lot. Sides of ba con from some farmers, hay and grain for the horses. One . SHORT, M.D. [as of 1928] For ove r thirty years Dr. Joseph M. Short, of Portland, has been engaged in th e practice of m , on the Grand river, Canada, in 1871, and is a son of Wi lliam and Mary (Faulkner) Short. Th n thirteen children, John, James, Wi lliam, Mary, Sarah, Robert, Joseph M., Ralph, Jane, Faulk Joseph M. Shor t received his early education in the public schools of Canada and durin g his s nada, and completed his course at the Detroit College of Medicin e and Surgery, Detroit, Michi ms at Solon Springs, Wisconsin, where he re mained three and a half years, and in 1900 located In 1912 Dr. Short cam e to Portland, where he has been engaged in the general practice of med i d methods in both medical practice and surgery, and he enjoys a large p ractice. He recalls s y called upon to make long and tiresome trips int o remote parts of the forests. When startin d sometimes with horses an d buggy, sometimes horseback and sometimes with neither. Except th udin g such pioneer families as Latourelle, Hurlburt, Lusted, Revenue and Mein ig, of whom now hole day was consumed in one call where now all could b e called upon in one day. This was in Dr. Short was united in marriage t o Miss Sarah A.
