Notes
Marg O. Boies, was a close relative to Thomas E. Kelleher. Helen & Franci
s (a.k.a. Shanny) Kelleher had arranged in their will to have Marg & he
r close friend and living companion Greta Koderl become the guardians o
f Tom if Helen & Shanny should die before he was 21.
Marg & Greta bought Tommy Kelleher his first 2 wheeler bicycle ( on his a
pprox. 1956 at age 9 ). The first trip on the new bike was to St. Franci
s DeSales Church with Sandy Gigliotti for confession.
Tom wrote Marg and Greta on a regular basis - though in fact Greta did th
e most writing. Tom and his family probably developed the close relations
hip with Marg & Greta while they lived on Thurston Road in a rented duple
x. The family would visit there in conjunction to visiting Jim while he w
as at the Seminary in Rochester. In the early years of Marg & Greta's res
idence in Rochester, N.Y., after moving from Bradford PA., visits were pr
imarily for holidays and at that time Mrs. Emma Koderl ( Greta's mother
) was living with them and she was famous in the family for her 'lump les
s' mashed potatoes.
Both Marg & Greta were Nurses, and each had earned their Master's Degre
e in Nursing from the University of Rochester. Marg taught Nursing at th
e Uof R and Greta was the chief of nursing for the Rochester city hospita
ls.
HISTORY OF THE NAME BOIES:
The researchs done by the genealogists in the Province of Quebec and th
e members of the Bois, Boies family association allow us to say withou
t a doubt that the ancestor of all the Bois and Boies families in North A
merica is Jacques Boy. He was born june 24, 1671, in the parish St-Michel
, in the city of Poitiers, France. He was the son of René Boy and Renée B
oyer. He appears for the first time in the records, february 25, 1699 a
s a witness to the marriage of Jacques Gauthier and Agathe Failly in th
e parish Notre-Dame de Quebec.
When he arrived in Quebec city between 1690 and 1692 Jacques was a soldie
r in the regiment of the Baron de Longueuil. We find him in Montreal in 1
703, where he has problems with the law. In order to avoid the sentence h
e had received, he then decided to go as far as possible from Montreal an
d Quebec until Riviere-Ouelle. There he married Marie-Anne Soucy on novem
ber 24, 1704. They had eight children: Jacques, Joseph, Jean-Baptiste, Je
an-Bernard, André, Marie-Madeleine, Francois-René and Etienne.
Marie-Anne Soucy was the daughter of Jean Soucy also called Lavigne and o
f Jeanne Sauvenier. She was born in Ile-aux-Oies, on september the 5, 167
1. Before marrying Jacques Boy, she had been married to Jean Lebel with w
hom she gave birth to 5 children which were adopted by Jacques Boy.
The family owned a piece of land of 4 by 42 arpents situated in Iroquoi
s Cove in Riviere Ouelle. In order to nourish his family, he had to be bo
th farmer and fisherman. It is why in july 6, 1710 we can see a dispositi
on by the intendant Jacques Raudot in favor of Jacques Boy and his associ
ates permitting them to strech a net in front of their land in order to f
ish for dolphins.
He died in Riviere-Ouelle on november 13, 1741 at the age of 70. Marie-An
ne died two and a half years later and was buried february 5, 1743. Non
e of their sons stayed in Riviere-Ouelle and the land was sold. Three son
s :' Jacques and the twins Jean-Baptiste and Jean-Bernard ': went to liv
e in Ste-Anne-de-la-Pocatière and Etienne went to Quebec city.
Ste-Anne-de-la-Pocatière became the cradle place where the Boy started t
o grow before spreading first to the north shore of the St-Lawrence Rive
r and after in New-Brunswick, Ontario and the United-States.
In the various deeds signed by Jacques the family name Boy changed slowl
y to become Bois and later on the north shore of the St-Lawrence, Bois be
came Boies. Both of these family names bear the same ancestor.
