He studied medicine with his kinsman and uncle by marriage, Dr. James Hur lbut, and received a diploma from the Connecticut Medical Society (Jame s Potter President) dated Oct. 20, 1782. He also studied medicine with th e first Oliver Wolcott, Governor of Connecticut, who was a physician in L itchfield. He resided with the Governors family and contacted a close int imacy with Oliver Wolcott Jr. (afterward Sec. of the Treasury under Pres . Washington) and also a strong friendship with judge Tappan Reeve, and h is young brother-in-law Aaron Burr. His father deeded him (June 21, 1784 ) land in Worthington Soc., Berlin, Ct. He first settled in practice of h is profession at Sheffield, Mass., but removed to Upper Houses, Middletow n, Ct. He and his wife were recommended by the church in Sheffield, on Ap ril 27, 1783, to the church in Upper Houses. Dr. Hurlbut was said to hav e had a 'noble face, and commanding presence,' and possessed more than or dinary colloquial powers, with a keen and brilliant wit. With a fine lite rary taste, he had the English poets at his command; Milton, Young and Th ompson, he knew by heart. He indulged in the muses himself sometimes, an d wrote a poem called 'Progress of Quackery', suggested by presence of em piric who had started up in his neighborhood. The product, it is said, ha d the effect to drive the unfortunate subject of it from the town. He wro te the family name 'Hulbert', and insisted (for reasons which have not co me down to us,) that this was the correct mode. Mrs. Hurlbut, in the 60t h year of her age, died of ossification of the heart. (HG) The "Abstract s of Graves of revolutionary Patriots" by Patricia Law Hatcher, says he w as a Revolutionary War patriot. Per "Centennial Address, with Historica l Sketches of Cromwell, Portland, Chatham, Middle-Haddam" by David D.Fiel d, DD (1853), page 247, Hosea Hurlburt, a native of Kensington, practise d (medicine) here from 1783 until 1790, moved to the town of Kilingworth .
