He graduated from Yale College in 1849, at which he latter tutored, and w
as invited to a professorship at Beloit College. Having finished a cours
e of theological study, he planed on preaching the gospel. But he long su
ffered from debility and desease, and went abroad with the hope of regain
ing his health by relaxation and travel. The rapid proogress of desease d
issappointed his hope, and bore his an early grave. He was unmarried. (HG

Recent Deaths.
In Paris, on the 4th of July, Mr. Joseph Hurlbut, Jr., of this city, age
d 27 years. He had been long been suffering from debility and disease, a
nd went abroad in the hope of regaining health by relaxation and travel
. But the rapid progress of disease disappointed this hope and has born
e him thus unexpectedly to the grave, leaving a wide circle of relative
s and friends to mourn their deep and afflictive bereavement. Mr. Hurlbu
t was an accomplished and indefatigable scholar; he had been a tutor in Y
ale and invited to a professorship in Beloit College. At an early age, h
e made a profession of religion, which he steadily adorned by a faithfu
l Christian life. He was a man of great conscientiousness, purity and si
ngleness of character, respected and esteemed by all who knew him. Havin
g finished a course of theological study, he was looking forward to the p
rospect of preaching the Gospel.
But an all-wise Providence had otherwise determined. Fully conscious o
f his situation, he contemplated the end with calm composure and perfec
t resignation, and in the peaceful confidence of faith, quietly passed t
o his rest. --New London
