Resided in Farmer, Ohio in 1863. (HG)
The 1900 census shows Orin was 61 and his wife, Clara was 63 (T1043 #187 )
He was a Civil War Vet. Orren (spelling on his death certificate) move d from Ohio to Illinois. On his army papers he spelled his first name i n various ways, Orin, Oren and Orrin with a decided lack on consistency . Informal family notes say he had five wives, but there are no names.
By 1st wife: Clinton and Clara Hulbert.
By 2nd wife: Harley, twins Frank and Elas (died in Channahon 1940?), Mab el (died in infancy 1890)
According to his certificate of death #7019 Register #8, his wife at th e time of his death was Julia Hulbert.
He was a retired merchant and was born in Defiance County, Ohio. From th e 1900 U.S. census T1043 #187 his name is spelled Orin S. and his residen ce: Will County, Channahon TPKE and his wife at that time was "Clara".
From a copy of his Volunteer Enlistment papers he signed his own name a s "Oren S. Hurlbut", as of October 22, 1864 in the 182 Reg. of the Ohiu o Infantry. In a company "Muster Roll", dated Feb 28, 1865, he spelled hi s name "Orin" S. Hurlbut and on another as "Orrin" Hurlbut, Co.K, 182 Reg 't Ohio Infantry, Aged 21, height 6 ft., complextion "Dark", eyes "blue" , hair "dark".
However, later on, on a hospital muster roll, for payroll purposes, he s igned his name Orin S Hulbert.
On a Co. muster-out roll, dated 4 Jul 1865 at Nashville, tenn., he signe d the roll as Orin S Hurlbut and then on a detachment muster roll as Ori n S Hulbert.
His death certificate says he died of "chronic nephbritis with contribut ory senility", and shows his wife as Julia Hulbert.
