Clara met her husband; Edward Arthur Ray when they both were living in Wi lliamsburg. Ed's father did the city's maintence work for several years . Clara was a school teacher. She was to take a position teaching in an other town meaning she move away from her family but her mother, Emily ju st wouldn't allow her to go so far away. That was about the same time sh e met and married Mr. Ray. Clara Seymour Ray Wheeler had 1 son and 4 daug hters by Arthur Ray and one son with Mr. Wheeler. Clara took in washing s from the Railroad workers after her first husband died so young. Her so n-Harold Ray was about 18 and tried so hard to become the 'man of the fam ily' so the family could stay on the farm..but it was just too much. Haro ld was a driver for Dr.Houser in Palo, IA. Doctor Houser trained Clara a s a midwife which she practiced until marrying Fredrick Wheeler. Persona l note: Clara was a not a tall woman. She had long dark hair as she rea lly didn't believe in cutting of women's hair. She would keep hers pinne d up with a comb that her daughter remembered always. She broke her arm m any years later (in a horse buggy and new fangled automobile-she and Mr . Wheeler were riding in the buggy when Dr. Houser was backing his auto o ut of his driveway. Although Dr. Houser set her arm, it never really hea led correctly.) and due to the broken arm she couldn't comb her hair up a s eaily. She had blue eyes. [S127]
