Died in Bridgeport, Ct., of Brights Disease. The following is from a news paper clipping owned by Misses Charlotte and Marion Hurlburt; 'John H Hur lburt, who died at his home in Bridgeport, Ct., September 11, was for man y years one of the most prominent teachers in northwestern, Ct. Educate d at Trinity College, he established at Lime Rock, Ct., in 1865, a privat e school known as Rocky Dell Institute which for over twenty years ranke d foremost among schools of its kind in this part of the state. During th is time he came in contact with a large number of young people, upon whos e minds and characters he exerted a powerful influence. Remarkable abilit y as a disciplinarian combined with a kindliness of manner made him bot h popular and successful in his profession. As an instructor he especiall y excelled in the line of mathematics, his methods showing strong origina lity of mind and remarkable clearness of thought. A majority of the publi c school teachers in Salisbury and the surrounding towns have been from a mong his pupils. [S141]

'Keenly interested in all the literary and social questions of the day, h is influence upon the intellectual life of the community was decidedly st imulating. He was closely identified with the educational affairs of th e town in which he resided, and took a prominent part in all teacher conv entions. Public spirited in a large degree, in 1882 he served as a membe r of the State legislature, and in 1886 was appointed Collector of Intern al Revenues by the Government. This closed his career as a teacher. [S141]

'The news of his death at the comparatively early age of 53 brings to al l his former pupils a sense of personal loss. His body lies at rest withi n the shadow of those hills among which he gave the best of his powers t o others. More enduring than any monument, ever widening, irresistible, t he influence he exerted lives on.' [S141]
