It's Sandy, Loren's cousin. ' I took the liberty of answering you becaus e I know how frustration it can be to wait for an answer. Loren (I cal l him Bob) has been ill. He has been in and out of the hospital with som e serious health problems. Hopefully, he is now on the road to recovery a nd you will hear from him soon. In the meantime I hope you find the inf o at Genforum of use. I will be doing the search on Carlton's parents th is week and will let you know as soon as I hear anything. Finding Carlto n's grandfather Carl has been the thorn in my side for quite some time . No one seems to know what happened to him. He is not buried in the fa mily plot and he was gone from the census by 1875. His youngest son wa s 5 at the time. The last name was changed (according to family lore) be cause it was not fashionable to be quite so German in those days. In th e 1875 census the name was spelled Smithing. This is the first I have he ard that name and I don't think it was commonly used. I think it might h ave been the census takers interpertation (or what he thought he heard).
The other children of Carl and Elizabeth are Charles G. b.prox.1859 Juli a E. b.Dec.16,1862 Emily b. prox. 1864 Clara b. prox. 1867 Edwar d b. prox. 1870

I assume you know Ethel (Betty) Greenwood Hulburt married Carlton Wertz i n Mt. Morris, NY. They had 2 children, Carlton Jr. and Carol. Betty an d Carl moved to McAllen, Tx. and I guess they died there. Bob tells me C arlton Jr. is married and lives in Brownsville, Tx. Carol married Davi d Parker and lives in New England. Both have children. I think Bob writ es/talks to Carol now and then. He may have addresses.
Carlton's father Frederick Wertz d. Arpil 14, 1901. His mother, Louise d . Jan. 3, 1948. Both are burried in Forest Lawn Cemetery, 1141 Delawar e Ave., Buffalo, NY 14209. Phone 716-885-1600 Fax 716-881-6482. The co ntact person there is Janice Burnett and I know she is only in the offic e on rare occasions. It is best to write or fax. I am just beginning m y search of some of the people buried here and will be glad to share my i nformation. I will follow up with an attachment I have of the family plo t and the names of my current searches.

Shown below is data extracted from the Net @ (http://hometown.aol.com/lou dounva/virts.html] on WERTZ (Jan 2000) Wilhelm and his children appeare d to not be able to read or write. All known deeds and ships logs for Wil helm, Wilhelm Jr., Peter and Conrad show only their signatures as an 'X' .
The ships logs show Wilhelm, Wilhelm Jr. and Peter’s surnames as Wurtz. S ince Wilhelm probably could not read or write the Ship’s logs would hav e been created phonetically. But with further research this appears tha t this may not be correct. Michael Virts, son of Peter Philip Wurtz purch ased land in 1801. On the deed he signed his name Mijael Werz, in Germa n (see above signature). It appears he signed his name phonetically and n ot grammatically. Mijael is the German phonic pronunciation for Michael , the 'j' has a 'k' sound. This would have been true for his last name a s well. So was the surname in Germany Wurtz or Werz? Both sound very simi lar. This would lead one to believe that Michael did have some education . At that time, mid to late 1700’s when Michael would have been in school , the German settlements only taught the old German language and not Engl ish.
This would explain why Michael would have signed his name in German. Whe n Werz is phonetically spoken in German it sounds like Verts. To even fur ther prove this point, Michael’s surname in the deed appears as Verts. Al so of note is that Wilhelm Sr.’s name appears as Wirz on his tombstone wh ich is very close to Werz.
Above we have Peter Philip Virtzs' (son of Wilhelm Wurtz) signature on a n Early Virginia Religious Petition, dated November 5, 1793, Loudoun, 'Ge rmain Episcopelian Society', for lottery to raise funds for building a ch urch. Even though this is not Peter's actual signature, still finding i t interesting noting the spelling of the last name.
Even to further confuse things, for the Virts’that left Loudoun County th ere are at least four different spellings of their surnames that exist to day. The ones who moved to southern Virginia spelled their name as Wertz . The ones that moved two Missouri the name was spelled Verts and the Ohi o Virts, of which at least two separate lines moved there, one spelled th eir last name as Werts and the other as Virts. In Loudoun County the nam e fluctuated quite a bit until after the civil war when the name begins t o settle in as Virts. In most of these cases the different spellings ca n be attributed to lack of education during that time period. Most of th e spellings were completely phonetically associated. You can see this i n census records, were there are brothers living side by side, neither co uld read or write and the last name is spelt differently in the same cens us record in the same year.
