HURLBUT, HENRY, was born in the town of Ava, N. Y., October 1, 1853, so
n of Samuel, a native of Boonville, and Minerva (Bardsley) Hurlbut, a nat
ive of Ava. Samuel Hurlbut came from Boonville to Ava and purchased the f
arm now occupied by Henry Hurlbut, where he engaged in farming, and he sp
ent his last days in Utica, where he died in October, 1881. Mrs. Hurlbu
t still lives and resides with her son on the homestead. Henry Hurlbut wa
s educated at Rome Academy, and has always been engaged in farming on th
e homestead farm, except three years in the lumber business in Western. T
he farm of 330 acres is owned by Mr. Hurlbut and his brother Andrew, wh
o is engaged in the general mercantile business. Mr. Hurlbut has a dair
y of thirty-five to forty cows. In 1874 he married Nellie, daughter of St
ephen and Esther (Harris) Potter, by whom he has three children: Ettie, B
ertie and Mertie. (p. 212)
