Ferrisburgh - After a brief illness, Bernice Hurlburt Whitney DeVine, 85
, died on May 30 at her home, surrounded by loved ones.
She was born Bernice Carlene Hurlburt on Dec. 3, 1918, to Roy and Naom
i Follensbee Hurlburt. She was the youngest in the family; her older brot
her, George, and sister, Helen Hurlburt Bristol, have both predeceased he
r.
In 1936, she graduated from Vergennes High School, having traveled man
y winter days to school by horse. She continued her education at the Univ
ersity of Vermont where she received a teaching certificate in 1940. Befo
re starting her family, she taught home economics and English at Beeman A
cademy. Besides her years as a teacher, she was a receptionist for Dr. Wi
lliamson, a teaching assistant and hot lunch cook at Beeman Academy an
d a personal care assistant.
On Jan. 3, 1946, she married Floyd "Stub" Whitney. Her wedding dress wa
s made from a parachute, because silk fabric was in short supply due to W
orld War II. They were married for 34 years before he died in 1980. The
y lived in New Haven, raising three children: Alan, who now lives in thei
r childhood home, Carlene Salois of East Glacier Park, Mont., and Chery
l Werner of Middlebury.
In 1998, she married her high school and college sweetheart, Karl Devine
; they were together for five years. Her companion, Ernest Elwell of More
town, also predeceased her.
She was active in her church, serving as deacon and busy in the Ladies U
nion where she cooked for church suppers. She was known for her homemad
e pies and her Hurlburt baked beans. She belonged to Eastern Star, the Gr
ange and historical societies, served on zoning and school boards and enj
oyed card parties with her friends. She loved to travel and had made trip
s to Hawaii, Alaska, Scotland, Florida and Montana. She enjoyed sewing, k
nitting and crocheting, reading, entertaining and gardening.
In addition to her children, she is survived by two sons-in-law, Verli
n Salois and David Werner, three grandchildren; and many nieces and nephe
ws.
Funeral services were held Thursday morning at the New Haven Congregatio
nal Church, followed by interment in Evergreen Cemetery, New Haven.
Memorial donations can be made to the Addison County Home Health and Hos
pice, Vergennes Area Rescue Squad or the New Haven Congregational Church.
