Notes

His name appears on the list of soldiers as one of Captain Wait Hinman' s company from Woodbury, which marched for the relief of Fort William Hen ry in 1757. It is reported that he lived awhile in Sharon, Ct, and also i n Egremont, Mass. as a permanent settler. He graduated from Nassau Hall , Princeton, New Jersey, 1762, became a practicing physician, was a magis trate, was first clerk of the town of Alford 1773, and a member of the Co nvention in Mass., which ratified the Federal Constitution in 1788. Dr Jo hn was a prominent man in his neighborhood, and unquestionably a very dec ided man in his opinions, and he may have been the gentleman spoken of b y Judge Church in his Centennial Address at Litchfield, when he said: ' A spark from the flame in Berkshire County, has flown over into Sharon. O ne Dr Hurlbut an emissary of Shay's visited that Town in the spring of 17 87, to enlist men in his cause. He made some impression.' Dr Hurlbut in 1 792 and previously, wrote the family name 'Hurlbut', in 1793 he changed t he mode to 'Hulbert', which manner it appears he settled on, and that for m of orthography is generally followed by his descendants. (Hurlbut Gen. ) The book 'Connecticut Nutmegger Who Migrated' list his name as 'Hulbert ' and as having been born on Jan 29, 1735 in Ct. (JH)
