  Samuel and Mary [Porter] Grant were great, great, great, great grandparen ts of Ulysses S. Grant who was born in 1822. I was given this informatio n by Gwendolyn J. [Cole] Howell, who is also a descendant of Samuel and G race Grant. I knew Gwen when we were living in Utah, 1985-90. She was mar ried to Arthur H. Howell, Jr., now deceased. Currently she lives in Flori da, near their daughter, Sheryal Vandenberghe.
  
  'At the eighth reunion of the Grant Association in Windsor, Conn., o n 3 June 1931, a memorial was dedicated to Matthew & Priscilla Grant. Th e speeches that day told many interesting stories about those two early s ettlers and their descendants. It was revealed that the famous term, 'unc onditional surrender' used by President Roosevelt during WWII, was firs t used by General Ulysses S. Grant, the most famous descendant of Matthe w and Priscilla Grant.'
