Notes
a personal note: Emily was a tiny woman in height. She had very long dar
k hair that she would alway comb up in a 'bun'. Emily was 7 years old whe
n her family along with her six brothers and sisters came to Iowa traveli
ng by horse and wagon as far as ILL. There they obtained a team of oxen a
nd continued to Iowa in a covered wagon to a spot nine miles NW of Ceda
r Rapids, near Palo, where they settled. The place was a wilderness of p
rairie and it was necessary for Mr.Bradley Hutchins to plow two furrough
s to the schoolhouse so that the children could find the way. Land sol
d for $1.25 an acre and Mr. Huthins obtained his from the goverment. Ceda
r Rapids had two stores when Emily first saw it and at the age of 14 sh
e saw the first train pull into Cedar Rapids. Emily lived the majority o
f her later years with her children. Several of those years she lived wit
h Clara and her children in Palo and Shellsburg, Iowa. During those year
s she worked as a in-house nurse or (mid-wife) staying at the homes of th
e people she was taking care of. In 1995 her grand daughter (Inez Chene
y age 85) can remember Emily as a loving, caring woman. Just before he
r death she suffered several mini strokes. From THE VINTON EAGLE: FRIDA
Y MORNING, JUNE 8. 1923: Mrs. W.H. Seymour died Thursday at the home of h
er daughter, Mrs. Ernest Wheeler, where she resided for five years. Sh
e had been an invalid for a long time, and death followed cerebral hemorr
hage. Emily Cerene Hutchins was born Nov. 18, 1844, in Lawrence County, N
ew York and came to Iowa in 1861 locating in Linn County, with her parent
s. She married J.P. Freese, and shortly after their marriage he enliste
d in Co. D 12th Iowa Infantry. While on duty he was taken ill at St. Lou
is and was sent home and died the day after reaching home. Some years lat
er Mrs. Freese married W.H. Seymour and three daughters were born to them
. The deceased was a member of the United Evangelical church. She was a
lways ready to sacrifice for her family. Those who survive are a sister
, Effie McAllister, of Cedar Rapids, and three daughters, Mrs. Wheeler, o
f Shellsburg; Mrs. Bessie McVey, of Minnesota, and Mrs. Mabel Antoine, o
f St. Louis, who had been here the past week to assist in caring for he
r mother. Short services were held at the Wheeler home Thursday afternoo
n and funeral services were held at the Palo Methodist church, conducte
d by Rev. Batton. Interment was in Spring Grove cemetery.
