Notes

At the age of sixteen he started working as a messenger in the guardmaste rs office of the Erie Railroad Co. and was with them for four years. He w as also in the hotel business with his brother, George, in Dunkirk, New Y ork. After his marriage he stayed in Dunkirk about a year and then remove d to Harrington, Nebraska, where he was a partner in a bank with his brot her-in-law, U K Loose. They then moved to Youngstown, Ohio. they were liv ing in the Todd House when he became acquainted with Walter Bostwick. Bos twick had invented a metal lath and was looking for associates. A compan y was formed in Niles, Ohio in 1891. Shortly after, Mr Bostwick sold hi s patent and equipment and returned to England. At that time William beca me secretary and general manager. In 1902 he became president and continu ed until 1936, when W Griswold Hurlbert Jr (his son) succeeded him. (Hul- Ren)
