He settled in his native town. At one time owned much real-estate on Mai
n Street in Chatham Landing, leading from Middletown Ferry to Churchill'
s Landing, besides extensive vessel interests. The homestead, in 1855, wa
s occupied by Mr. Bidwell, and stood nearly opposite the Episcopal Church
. After the death of Ebenezer's second wife, the family was broken up, th
e children going to live with various uncles and aunts. Ebenezer died o
f Small- Pox, caught from his son Amos, who was returning from the army
, during the Revolution. He was buried by the side of John Miles who ha
d also died from Small-Pox caught from Amos Hurlbut. The place of their i
nternment was the North Burying Ground in Chatham (now Portland) at the f
oot of the Meeting House Hill, on the west side of the yard, near the N.W
. corner. There is a stone at Miles' grave, but none at that of Ebeneze
r Hurlbut, whos remains were laid at the north side of those of Miles.

Notes
The following was found on an old paper of Laura Ray Gardemanns' by her g
randaughter-Janet, in 1995 which started this whole genealogy quest. Alt
hough there wasn't alot of information here, it was enough to locate ou
r ancestors mentioned in the following, and, to apply to the DAR. Minerva
's mother's people were French and English. Her Grandmother sold jewel
s and valuables to contribute funds to the Colonists in the Revolutionar
y War. The family were close friends of LaFayette, often entertaining hi
m at their home. Becasue of taking sides with the Colonists they lost the
ir right to the succession to the title and estate of the Earl of Clarend
on, who descended from the family of Annie Hyde from where the family nam
e of Hyde originated. At the time of Anne Hyde's death her two brother
s fled to France in fear of Henry V111 and from there migrated to the Col
onies when the Huguenots were leaving France. The Earldom was declared v
acated and since then the title of Earl of Clarendon has been given to an
yone the King desires and is not an inherited title as the rightful holde
r is a citizen of the United States. At one time 350 descendants of th
e original stock met in Bostn, Mass and compared notes thus established t
he above facts beyond question. This information can be used should an
y of the women of the family ever wish to take a membership in the D.A.R
.
