BIRTH: Birth date and place is based on Civil War and Iowa Soldiers Hom
e records. Is birth county an error? Could he have been born in Otsego Co
unty, same as brother Augustus? Augustus record is more specific since i
t gives town as well as county. MILITARY: Ransome enlisted for 3 years i
n Co K, 26th Iowa Infantry in 1862 at stated age 18, which if correct mak
es his birth year 1844, four years earlier than 1848 in his Soldiers' Hom
e record. Occupation shown in enlistment is pilot (would this be a riverb
oat pilot?). There may have been a prior enlistment in 7th Missouri Infan
try. His Federal military record ends in October 1963. Iowa records indic
ated he was captured by the Confederates and held until the end of the wa
r. In an Arkaansas battle (prior to his later capture) he was wounded i
n the 3rd finger of left hand and disabled there for the rest of his life
. He was captured 21 Apr 1864 at Guntersville, Alabama, and held at the i
nfamous Andersonville prison. He was shot in the left hip by a guard a
t 2 AM on 6 Sep 1864 (trying to escape?). He was exchanged at the end o
f that year, and spent 3 months in Jarvis Hospital, Baltimore, MD. Whil
e there he was treated for scurvy contracted in Andersonville. He was mus
tered out 6 June 1865. RESIDENCES: 1865-68 Lyons, Clinton County, Iow
a 1868-72 Memphis Tennessee 1873 Chicago, Illinois 1873-8
6 Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas 1888 Admitted, Iowa Soldi
ers Home. Stated age 40 and widower. 1893 Readmitted, Iowa Soldier
s Home 1899 Released from home by own request. 1900 Residen
t of home per 1900 Federal census. There is no record of where he died bu
t it is believed he died at the home. SOURCE: The 1900 Federal census fo
r Iowa, Marshall County, Linn Township, Iowa Soldiers Home is source fo
r birth date and place, and states he was a widower.
