NAT HURLBUTT PASSES AWAY

Friends in this section have received word of the death at his home in L ake county on December 17th of Nat Hurlbutt, one of the best known of th e pioneer settlers of Eel river valley. Death followed an illness of abo ut three weeks with kidney trouble, and the funeral took place on Decembe r 19th at Kelseyville. Decedent is survived by his wife and a brother, L ew Hurlbutt, both of Lake county. A nephew, Harry Hurlbutt, is a residen t of Alton. Mr. Hurlbutt was one of the early settlers of Humboldt and w as prominently identified with the development of Eel river valley. He m oved to Lake county in the neighborhood of twelve
years ago, and was the owner of considerable property near Kelseyville . He was known to practically everybody in Humboldt and the news of his p assing will be received with deep regret.

OBITUARY

In the Lake County Bee is found the following report of the death of Nat haniel Hurlbutt, which was chronicled in last Tuesday’s Enterprise: ‘Nath aniel Hurlbutt, a well known resident of Lake county since 1890, passed a way at his home in Big Valley early Tuesday morning at the age of nearl y seventy-one years. Mr. Hurlbutt’s death came after months of suffering , the direct cause of his demise being kidney trouble. For years the dec eased had been a sufferer from a form of rheumatism and had been oblige d to walk with crutches, and this malady finally developed complications , among them being the affection of the kidneys which proved fatal. Th e funeral was held at the Kelseyville Presbyterian church Thursday mornin g, the body being taken after the service to the Odd Fellows’ Cemetery a t Kelseyville for interment. The funeral was attended by a large numbe r of sorrowing friends beside the bereaved relatives. Beside his wife Mr . Hurlbutt is survived by one brother, L. S. Hurlbutt, also of Big Valley . Nathaniel Hurlbutt was a native of Dalton, New Hampshire, where his ea rly manhood was spent. In the fall of 1865 he was united in marriage t o Miss Emiline Carter, and the couple started for the Pacific Coast the s ame year, in company with L.
S. Hurlbutt, the only brother of the deceased. The trip was made by ste amship to the Isthmus of Panama, where the crossing was made from the Atl antic to the Pacific and passage taken for San Francisco. The Hurlbutt’ s settled first in Marin county, where Mr.Hurlbutt conducted a dairy busi ness for several years. Finally he disposed of his Marin property and mo ved to Humboldt county where he purchased another dairy farm. The home o f the family was made in Humboldt until 1890, when the move to Lake count y was made. Upon coming here Mr. Hurlbutt purchased a choice tract of la ke shore land in Big Valley, and ha resided there continuously since. Mr . Hurlbutt was a man of considerable wealth and is reputed to have left a n estate of great value. He was prominent in
the affairs of the county and was a member of the directorate of the Yoc olano and Clear Lake Water company, recently organized and composed of so me of the most substantial men of the county. He was a man of upright ch aracter and had many strong friends. His death is deeply regretted throug hout the community. [S1022]
