MISC!:excerpted from 'A Tribute to Dorothy Bryson on Her 100th Birthday ' -- Born in Britton, South Dakota, she graduated in 1915 from Oberlin co llege with a major in Classics and went on to Radcliffe for an MA in th e same field. A few years of teaching in secondary schools preceded a sc holarship to the University of Chicago that helped her pursue a doctorate . There, in 1921, she was beginning a dissertation about Plautus and Rom an comedy when she decided to accept a one-year appointment as an instruc tor in Classics at Colorado College. . . . . At Colorado College, Cupi d quickly intervened in her PhD plans, for she fell in love with Archer B utler Hulbert, a widower with two daughters. In 1923, she was married th is handsome, gregarious history professor, who was almost twenty years he r senior. . . . In 1933, at the bottom of the Depression, Archer Hulber t died suddenly and unexpectedly. Overcoming all obstacles, Dorothy vali antly carried on the unfinished work of the Stewart Commission. . . . Sh e married again in 1938; sadly, her husband, Colonel Franklyn F. Wing, di ed only four years later. The second hallmark of Dorothy's character, he r devotion to commmunity service, came to the fore at this juncture. Dur ing World War II, she served as executive director of the colorado Spring s YWCA. . . . Then in 1951 she came back to her favorite institution, Co lorado College, where she served until 1960 in various new roles: as th e exective secretary of the summer session under Dean Adams, as part-tim e lecturer in English, and as the head resident of Montgomery and McGrego r Halls. . . . While most people fade into retirement at the age of 65 , Dorothy was just reaching the peak of her performance. At 69 she marri ed for a third time -- a CC graduate of the Class of 1911, Arthur Earl Br yson. . . . All of Dorothy Bryson's remarkable accomplishments have bee n carried out with seeming equanimity and unassuming modesty. Although s he now walks with a cane and wears a hearing aid, she remains bright-eye d and smartly dressed, and her mind seems as sharp as ever. She appear s frequently at college events, where she much prefers to inquire into th e welfare of others rather than to talk about herself; to face the futur e rather than to dwell on the past. . . .'
