Upon coming to Illinios he first settled in near Pittsfield, Pike County
, in 1849, four years later move to Nomikos, first settling on what is kn
own as the Travis farm. Shortly afterwards he settled on a tract of lan
d just south of the city limits., on which he lived until his death, maki
ng his home of late years with his son Warren.
An article in the newspaper (27 Dec. 1878): "An accident that almost pro
ved fatal befel Mr W.M.Hulbert, on Tuesday afternoon. He had been north o
f town to N.H.Coffey's farm for a load of corn. He put on a load of abou
t thirty bushels and when the accident happened was walking beside on hi
s way home. The road rounded and frozen hard and the wagon commenced slip
ping towards the side. Mr Hulbertwas on, down the slant. In attemptin
g to step out of the way, his foot slipped and he fell with his head dire
ctly in front of the hind wheel of the wagon. As he was falling he shoute
d to the horse to stop, but the wheel caught him behind his right ear an
d he was dragged several feet. The wheel slipped on the snow instead of p
assing over his head. The horse stopped just in the nick of time, and M
r Hulbert was almost miraculously saved from his perilous position receiv
ing only severe bruises and a bad cut on the back of his head...."

Evelyn came to Brockville with her family in 1928 and graduated from th
e Brockville General Hospital School of Nursing in 1936. Evelyn did priv
ate duty nursing and was with the Victorian Order of Nurses for a perio
d of time. She had worked at the tuberculosis sanitorium at St. Agathe
, Quebec before becoming the Night Supervisor at the Brockville General H
ospital. Evelyn accepted a position as Superintendent at the Fulford Hom
e in 1956 where she worked until shortly before her death in 1965. E
velyn is remembered as having been a kind and pleasant person who took he
r job seriously. She was a 'no nonsense' type while on duty at her chose
n profession. Evelyn was always there to help for any family health cris
is, giving freely of her time and boundless energy. A member of th
e First Presbyterian Church in Brockville her funeral service was coducte
d by the Rev. Leslie R. Renault. Pallbearers were David Wattam, Willia
m Smith, Allan Ferguson, Douglas Thomson, David Hurlbut and Charles Davis
.
